With Dr. Cornell West, 2023

Marcus is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Musicology & Ethnomusicology at Brown University, where he studies sound and culture through a historical and political lens. His research focuses on how Black music — including jazz, hip-hop, and gospel —functions as a form of resistance and forms collective identities.

His article “Whisper, Say We’re Free: Visualizing the Freedom Now Suite and Abbey Lincoln’s Voice of Protest” was published in the Journal of Jazz Studies.

You can find the article here.

He is currently writing his dissertation on 2020 Black Lives Matter music and how it was (re)produced on social media.
